Caring for your feet is important to your overall health. With diabetes, caring for your feet is vital to your health. Many people do not think about feet when they think about diabetes, but your feet can be affected in numerous ways. Diabetes can cause peripheral neuropathy which is damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system. The most common form is peripheral polyneuropathy, which mainly affects the feet and legs. Neuropathy can cause sensory changes such as numbness to the feet. This is one reason why diabetic shoes are so integral to the care of the diabetic foot. If you are experiencing numbness in your feet, you may not feel pain associated with shoes that do not fit properly causing wounds that may not heal properly or become more serious. In addition, you may not feel pain associated with twisting or spraining your ankle, stepping on an object or otherwise hurting your foot while barefoot or wearing shoes with a thin sole. To compound the results of neuropathy, diabetes often causes poor circulation which decreases your body’s ability to heal and diabetics are more apt to get infections. So a small blister or sore could balloon into a large wound or ulcer that will not heal and possibly cause serious infection that could lead to amputation. Diabetes is the main cause for amputation. Medicare developed their Shoe Bill as an offensive measure to help people with diabetes care for their feet in partnership with their physician. Although we do not provide any insurance billing assistance, all of our diabetic shoes and diabetic shoe inserts are approved under the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill. The properties of approved diabetic shoes take into account the special needs of the diabetic foot. This is why you will see features like rocker bottom, wicks away moisture, breathable uppers, etc.
In addition to wearing proper shoes there are other measures you can take to care for your feet. Examine your feet daily and look for sores, blisters, cuts, changes to your toenails or anything that looks out of the ordinary and share it with your physician. Use a mirror if you need help seeing the bottom of your feet or ask someone to help you examine your feet. Wash your feet daily with soap in lukewarm water. Remember, if you are suffering from neuropathy scalding water may not feel hot to the touch so use your elbow to check the temperature of the water. Make sure your feet are completely dry after you wash them so no moisture is trapped. Always cut your toenails straight across when you trim them. If you have regular appointments with a podiatrist, this may be a service he offers in the office. Talk to your doctor about a healthy and active lifestyle. Always wear shoes – even inside your house.
Please talk to a physician if you are experiencing any foot pain associated with diabetes. We are here to offer products that will help you after you and your doctor have developed a treatment plan.
